CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) has appointed Star and Disney India managing director K Madhavan as the chair of the M&E committee.
He takes over the position in CII from former Viacom18 group CEO and MD Sudhanshu Vats, who is now serving as the chief executive officer and managing director of Essel Propack Limited.
CII is a non-government, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-managed organisation. Founded in 1895, it has over 9,000 members, from the private as well as public sectors, including SMEs and MNCs, and an indirect membership of over 300,000 enterprises from around 265 national and regional sectoral industry bodies.
It works with the Government on policy issues and has been a catalyst of change in India’s economic policy reforms. CII played a very important role during economic liberalisation in 1991 which knocked down the high walls of protection between Indian industry and the rest of the world.
Madhavan presently oversees Star & Disney India’s television business spanning across entertainment, sports, and regional channels and the studios business in India. He is responsible for driving the growth of the business, focussing on innovation, and creating compelling content for consumers.
Madhavan was appointed as the new Disney and Star India country manager in December 2019 after Sanjay Gupta moved to Google. He joined this role from 1 January 2020.
Prior to Disney and Star, Madhavan served as managing director of Asianet Communications and vice-president of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation. He directly reports to Walt Disney Company APAC, chairman and Star-Disney India president Uday Shankar.
