Award winning superwoman show from Pakistan Burka Avenger is all set to rock the TV screens of India and Afghanistan. Currently airing its season two on Nick Pakistan, the animated TV series about a female superhero will soon be airing on the kids channel from the Zee network in India.
Confirming the news to AnimationXpress.com, series creator Haroon said that both season one and two of the hit show will be aired on ZeeQ in India and will be dubbed in four languages. For Afghanistan it will be aired on Tolo TV and Lamer TV in Dari and Pashto. The original series was aired on Geo Tez and Geo Kahani in Urdu.
On ZeeQ, the show will launch on 6 April in English, Hindi and Telugu. It will later on be followed by a Tamil feed as well. Speaking to us, ZeeQ deputy business head Aparna Bhosle says, “Burka Avenger is an amazing show; both in terms of quality of animation as well as storytelling. We are always on the look out for shows with themes that are relevant to Indian children and we are very fortunate that we have this show. Each episode has a positive message with fun, action and comedy so that it does not come across as preachy. Burka Avenger has won many prestigious awards worldwide and it will be our honour to showcase it in India.”
The animated series revolves around a school teacher Jiya whose alter ego is a Burka wearing superwoman who uses a martial art form called Takht Kabaddi (involving pens and books) to fight crime. Produced by Unicorn Black, Pakistani singing sensation Haroon is the creator of the series. The 22 minute show was broadcasted first in Pakistan in 2013 and has also won several awards such as the Peabody Award 2013, Best TV show at Asian Media Awards, Rising Star Award (animation) at the Canada International Film Festival. It has also been nominated for an International Emmy Kids Award (animation) 2014.
Since launch, the show has received praises for its portrayal of a female superhero. Three games have been released on the same-Burka Avenger, Burka Madness and Burka Rescue as well as Burka Avenger T-shirts as merchandise.
