Creating Delhi Safari, outsourcing for about two and a half years and working with studio partners across India… all these led to the creation of Bioscopewala Pictures, an animation studio set-up by Nishith Takia in two cities: Pune and Mumbai.
Earlier there was a buzz around that the studio is opening in Goa, however the time wasn’t right as Takia says, “The Goa studio is still on the cards. It won’t be a production studio but would solely be for creative films. As far as the animated feature – Circle of Fire is concerned, the film is no longer in the pipeline.”
With a studio capacity of 60 people, the one year old studio in Pune currently has 30 artists working on projects to create content for TV channels in 2D animation. With 3D animation being consumed and produced at an exponential rate, Takia decided to venture into this space as well. With a belief that Mumbai has potential 3D artists, the Mumbai studio was inaugurated recently with about six artists bringing projects to life.
Takia believes that Bioscopewala Pictures is strong in production with key points being storyboarding and animatics. With a belief that they are “Local player with global perspective”, Takia mentions, “We are building content for the existing animation market. Before venturing into being full time IP creators or developing our own projects, I have observed that to survive in the animation industry, a sustainable model can be created by supporting the content creators, learn, gain experience and observe the market. We cater to studios like Maya Digital Studios, Green Gold Animation (Super Bheem), Toonz, Graphic India (Astra Force).”
With top quality work and tie-ups with India’s well recognised studios, the work culture at Bioscopewala is like its owner’s belief in life: fun-filled and open. Rather than the traditional pyramidal organisation structure, Takia follows the circular structure wherein everybody gets the opportunity to learn, lead and grow.
Not just outsourcing, Bioscopewala has managed to bag a co-production deal under its hood. With industry veterans like Marc Lumer, Pamela Hickey and Dennys McCoy, and Green Gold Animation working on this animated television series, the project is in works since the past 10 months. The IP is known as ‘Six Cylinder Samurai’ who’s a robot, a car, a samurai, and a wise-ass Teenager! He was built by Dr Kenneth “Kenny” Tesla, a brilliant young scientist who is nothing but a head. The Southwest Baron took Kenny’s body when he refused to pay his taxes.
The synopsis for the series is:
The distant future. Earth is under the rule of ruthless land barons. The barons and their cohorts live lives of luxury in the clouds, the masses live on an Earth covered in junk. But a hero has emerged: a cobbled-together samurai robot with the brain of a 21st century teenager, and powered by a ’53 Corvette racing engine. His partner: the disembodied head of a young scientist with a pack rat mentality.
We hope to see ‘Six Cylinder Samurai’ out soon and wish Nishith Takia good luck for his future endeavours.
