The 69th BAFTA Film Awards have declared its nominations for the Animated Feature, Short Film and Special Visual Effects category. Emerging as the British equivalent of the prestigious Academy Awards, the British Academy Awards hosted by BAFTA will be held on 14 February, 2016.
Similar to the Oscar nominations, BAFTA has also picked Disney Pixar’s comedy drama Inside Out directed by Pete Docter, Illumination Entertainment’s playful extravaganza Minions directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, and Aardman Animations’ stopmotion adventure Shaun the Sheep Movie directed by Richard Starzak and Mark Burton in the Best Animated Film category.
While in the British Animation Short category, the nominations include Nina Gantz’s Edmond which uses puppets to create an exemplary intruding story. In addition, Richard Williams’ Prologue which displays a serious screenplay of a fight between the Athenians and Spartans through a young girl’s observation and Simon Cartwright’s Manoman that seems to be a blend of puppetry and animation on a haunting therapy have been nominated as well.
Well, the Special Visual Effects category has the nominations that have by far stood distinctly both in the eyes of the creators and viewers. The nominations are Star Wars: The Force Awakens having Chris Corbould as its special effects supervisor, Mad Max: Fury Road having Andrew Jackson, Marvel’s Ant-Man having Jake Morrison, The Martian having Chris Lawrence and Ex Machina having Mark Ardington as its CG lead.
Unlike the Oscars, the BAFTA nominates only three films in the feature animation category and therefore it is always considered a tough competition to choose the best out of the phenomenal entries. But, the British Academy Awards is known for its justified nominations and this year too, the nominations in all the three categories are quite equitable.
