After the successful reboot launch of Archie’s new look in the new comic series Archie #1 by Mark Waid and Fiona Staple, the comic book character will come to life in the live action series Riverdale. This is the same series which was first being developed for Fox and now has moved networks and will air on The CW.
Each episode will be an hour long and the series will explore “the surrealistic twists of small-town life, in addition to the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade” and follow the life of Archie, Betty, Veronica and their friends which include the bandmates Josie and The Pussycats.
Everything else remains the same with Archie CCO Roberto Aguirre-Sacasais set to scribe for the pilot episode and is most well-known for writing the horror-inspired series Afterlife with Archie and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. In addition, he has written the scripts for the feature film remakes of Carrie and The Town That Dreaded Sundown plus multiple episodes of “Big Love,” “Glee,” and “Looking.” And giving Aguirre-Sacasais a helping hand on the pilot is Greg Berlanti who has tasted success with his earlier outings in comic to TV series adaptations namely, Arrow and The Flash. Sarah Schechter and Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater serve as executive producers.
Aguirre-Sacasa believed CW was the ideal network for the series based on the direct correlation that the characters had with the content there. The series is in scripting stage right now and is most likely to be on air by 2016.
Archie as a brand seems to be on a revival track – with a new comic book out and a TV series in the pipeline. The Riverdale gang according to CEO Goldwater “was moving down the path of irrelevancy” and needed much required makeover from what has been for the last 75 years.
