Once again Archie is coming in news; this time not for its newly launched revamped comic but for its musical. Archie’s will soon be experienced in live action Broadway musical. Writer-director Adam McKay (Anchorman, Antman) and Funny Or Die (Emmy-winning comedy video website and film/TV production company) have joined forces with Archie Comics to bring Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and the Riverdale gang to Broadway in an all-new musical.
The story of the musical will be written by McKay but it’s not certain if he will also be directing the musical. It should be noted that he has previously directed on Broadway with the 2009 outing You’re Welcome America, which starred Will Ferrell as George W. Bush. The songwriter is yet to be announced. Funny or Die will serve as a presenting partner. Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater and CCO Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will oversee the project for Archie Comics.
In a statement McKay described the brewing musical as “bright, colorful and slightly demented.” “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Adam McKay and Funny Or Die to finally bring Archie to the stage. We’ve always thought that Archie was destined to be a big Broadway star — and now that moment has come!” Jon Goldwater said. He added, “I’ve long admired Adam’s work and the pairing of Archie’s world with his brilliant humor and sensibility is the perfect fit. We look forward to developing this project together with this incredible team.”
Seems like coming up with musicals to promote a product will soon become a trend. This has been observed in India too, with kids’ favorite animated cartoon character ‘Chhota Bheem’ getting a musical treatment.
