A huge number of IT employees at the Walt Disney World had their last day on 30 January. The company which is in a restructuring process has let go off nearly 500 people according to reports.
Disney spokeswoman Jacquee Wahler is quoted by media reports as stating that the company is indeed undergoing a restructuring of its global technology organisation to ‘support future innovation and new capabilities’. She also stated that Disney will continue to work with leading technical firms to maintain the existing systems. She however didn’t give the number of people who have been asked to leave the firm.
Employees had been in informed in October 2014 that this would come to be. Much speculation is on jobs being outsourced internationally post India based HCL Technologies bagging Disney’s IT contract in 2012. Severance packages are being given to those asked to quit while some are being offered jobs in other areas of Disney.
HCL had signed a deal with Disney valued at around $200 million after ending their earlier one with IBM.
