Super Bowl in America is one of the most celebrated and televised events and getting an ad spot during it is bound to cost millions of dollars. This year, Super Bowl had close to $50 million in ad revenues and one of the companies that participated was Pokemon.
To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Pokemon had uploaded a video on its YouTube channel which was already grabbing eyeballs amongst the loyalist but the Sunday’s Super Bowl spot just got people crazy about the advert.
The spot, is set to have set back Pokemon by more than $3.5 million aired during the half time show, with estimated 190 million viewers watching the event live. Some fans have even hailed the spot as ‘the best Super Bowl commercial’ to air in the event’s lifetime. The YouTube video has already crossed 17.5 million views and has been viral on Twitter, reddit and other social media sites.
The video has a number of Easter Eggs and delighted fans started dissecting the video second for second on the internet. Easter Eggs we found on the video ourselves:
When the boy is seen running, a car graffiti shows an ancient Pokemon text on how to catch Mew.
At a local cafe a poster says ‘Learn to Surf’ with a HN03 written on it. HN03 is the code to surf in Pokemon games.
The young girl who is dominating a number of chess players all at once, a Nidoking chess piece is glimpsed in one of the games.
The football locker room, where the footballer has a number 20 jersey tells us that its Pokemon’s 20th anniversary. The helmets have a ‘Volcano Badge’. And two players when walk out together form 1996 from their jersey numbers, the year which Pokemon debuted. Finally the quote – ‘Like no one else’ – the title song of the first Pokemon series.
Next up is another Pokemon player who is standing on the city and on his left you can see MooMoo Milk and on his right you can see Rare Candy.
Finally, the ad shows the players inside the stadium with Charizad, Magneton, Gyarados and Lucario all welcoming our player. And then, the ad ends with a cute little cameo from the everybody’s favourite Pikachu.
