Reigning above the rest, Disney’s Zootopia has earned $1 billion at the global box office. It has thus become the second film of 2016 to reach this summit after Disney’s Captain America: Civil War ($1.132 billion).
Zootopia is the fourth animated feature to reach $1 billion after Disney Animation’s Frozen ($1.277 billion), Illumination Entertainment’s Minions ($1.159 billion) and Pixar’s Toy Story 3 ($1.063 billion).
Moreover, this animal adventure has become the second highest-grossing film of 2016, and the twenty sixth highest-grossing film of all time. It became a surprising hit after Deadpool and then went on to outdo Disney’s greatest creations Big Hero 6 (2014) and Frozen (2013) in its first weekend.
Zootopia has till date grossed $337.2 million in North America and $662.8 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $1 billion. The film released on 4 March, 2016 and in its first weekend itself collected $73.7 million in North America and $232.5 million worldwide.
Infact in its first weekend, the film broke opening records for a non-Pixar Disney animated film in China by grossing $23.6 million. On 24 April, it became the first ever film of 2016 to cross $900 million.
Produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios with a budget of $150 million, Zootopia opened in 3,100 3D theaters, 365 IMAX theaters and 325 premium large formats screens in North America and received a whooping response.
But considering the foreign market as well, apart from just the domestic market of North America, this film has performed well in other considerable markets like China and India too. Disney can definitely boast about this film both for its unique art of storytelling and box office numbers.
