In 1996, a British game researcher published a paper that classified gamers by their player types. Regarded as the definitive classification for gaming styles, Bartle’s paper even led to the creation of the Bartle Test of Gaming Psychology by Edwin Andreason and Bradley Downey.
While the test itself can tell gamers where on the Bartle Quotient they fall, it’s rather academic in its nature and contains 30 different questions.
Generally speaking, however, there are lots of different types of gaming styles. Here are five of the most common.
Strategic Gamers – You’ll find yourself in this category if you enjoy real-time strategy gaming, or playing games that are turn-based. With exceptional critical thinking, the ability to plan five steps in advance, and the patience to be in the game for the long haul, as a strategic player, you need something that engages your grey matter.
Games like Supreme Commander and the Civilization series will be right up your street. Strategy gamers also enjoy playing digital card games. For example, hole card blackjack is full of subtle nuances that will keep the most calculated gamers engaged as they play.
RPG Gamers – Do you enjoy getting lost in complex character creation, or letting the story of a game develop over a long timeframe? If so, you’re an RPG gamer. Luckily for you, the RPG category is one of the most prolific, so there’ll always be games for you for as long as there is a gaming industry to produce them.

Platformers – If you find yourself hearkening back to the glory days of console gaming, when you’d invest huge chunks of your week taking Mario on his mission to rescue Princess Peach, you fall into the platform gaming style.
