The Nintendo Switch will soon have a critically acclaimed Star Wars game. Aspyr Media has been working for several years to bring a number of classic Star Wars games to modern platforms, ensuring that they are available to a new generation of gamers.
Although Xbox and Disney have been successful in making backward compatible games such as Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Aspyr’s efforts are mainly restoration undertakings. The crew was most recently responsible for bringing Star Wars: The Force Unleashed to Nintendo Switch, as well as remastering games like Star Wars: Republic Commando for PlayStation 4, which was never released on PlayStation consoles.
Aspyr has announced that Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords would be released for Nintendo Switch. The game will be released on 8 June 2022 for $15 and it will include free DLC with restored content. The game earned positive reviews when it was first published in 2004, however it was criticised for feeling unfinished. Part of this was owing to the fact that the game was developed in around a year and a half and the publisher pushed the release date forward, forcing developer Obsidian Entertainment to eliminate a lot of content. A group of enthusiasts tried to restore this unfinished material and mod it back into the game, assisting in the realisation of Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ entire goal.
Aspyr released Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on Nintendo Switch in November. The game was not released on any other platforms, presumably because the developer is already working on a new version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for the PlayStation 5 and PC. Right now, there aren’t many details about the remake, but it’s expected to hit theatres in 2023.
