Brazilian studio Hype Animation has taken part in its first game endeavor: Reverie Knights Tactics. The game is produced by 40 Giants Entertainment, in co-production with Hype and Jambô Editora. Worldwide distribution is handled by European publisher 1C Entertainment (“King’s Bounty 2”).
The game blends turn-based strategy with visual novel-style presentation for a sumptuously animated, hand-drawn fantasy role-playing game. It is available now on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, alongside the new generation of consoles thanks to backward compatibility.
Reverie Knights Tactics is created and illustrated by EdH Müller, who produces with Gabriel Garcia e Guilherme Dei Svaldi. Hype’s Fabiano Pandolfi takes the animation director duties. “Reverie Knights Tactics” is an isometric adventure set in the celebrated Tormenta RPG setting, where it draws inspiration from more than 20 years’ worth of tabletop RPGs, comic books, novels and audiobooks.
“As the game’s illustrator, this is a subject near and dear to my heart. All the artworks in the game were hand-drawn. I did every single drawing with a mechanical pencil, using HB leads,” says EdH Müller. He estimates that nearly 400 sheets of paper were necessary for making the entire game.
“The process here is different from a regular game or conventional animation. We had the flexibility and time allowed by the RPG mechanics. Since the characters are seen from afar, we’ve worked a lot on the corporal expressions, ” explains Fabiano Pandolfi. According to Pandolfi, the 3D animation with cell shade anime style was chosen to best fit the game’s universe.
