Miniclip has announced that 8 Ball Pool has been awarded a Guinness World Records title for the Most Downloaded Mobile Pool Game.
Ranked as Miniclip’s number one game, with 796,721,888 downloads worldwide, committed players rack up 260 million hours of play time every month, potting 4,000 balls every second.
Miniclip President Rob Small said, “8 Ball Pool is a household name when it comes to mobile games, and we know it’s loved by so many around the world. We wanted to make this an official achievement to recognise the hard work of the teams that have built and contributed to it over the years as well as our amazing community of gamers.”
Starting its life as an online Flash game on the Miniclip website in 2010, driving 20 million monthly visits to the site, Miniclip released 8 Ball Pool on mobile in 2013. 8 Ball Pool was an immediate hit on mobile, becoming the most downloaded mobile pool game in 2014, a title it has held onto ever since, as confirmed by mobile app intelligence firm Sensor Tower.
The hugely popular billiards game has previously beaten games such as Candy Crush Saga and Pokémon GO to the top spot on the UK App Store’s top grossing charts.
Miniclip chief creative officer Sérgio Varanda said, “Being part of the 8 Ball Pool journey over the years, and being able to positively impact so many players around the world every day with this game, has been really remarkable. 8 Ball Pool has evolved tremendously to what it is today through a combination of determined teams and listening to our base of players and always aiming to put them first.”
To help players celebrate the Guinness World Records achievement, Miniclip will be holding a High Score event in 8 Ball Pool between the 12 and 29 August, themed around players and their own in-game achievements. This includes a themed season pass and rewards, limited themed events and brand new and exclusive Cues to be unlocked. Players will also be tasked to send as many gifts as possible to each other between the 14 and 29 August, with the goal of breaking the existing record of 2.5billion gifts sent in a similar time period, unlocking another exclusive Cue.
Guinness World Records adjudicator Richard Stenning said: “Achieving a record with Guinness World Records is no easy task, and we’re delighted to award Miniclip’s 8 Ball Pool the record for Most Downloaded Mobile Pool Game. This is a fantastic achievement, and one that will no doubt take some beating given downloads continue to rise daily.”
Miniclip is also celebrating its own 20th anniversary this year. Co-founder, and now president, Rob Small launched Miniclip.com in 2001 at the age of 24 with the dream of building a next generation game entertainment company. Today, Miniclip offers over 60 high-quality titles across more than 195 countries, generating three billion downloads and over 50 million active daily players.
