Jamie Foxx is returning as Electro in Spider-Man 3. The makers of the upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) have tapped Foxx to reprise his role from The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Foxx revealed in an Instagram post (now-deleted) that the new version of Electro won’t be blue as he was in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, this information doesn’t confirm whether Spider-Man 3 will be exploring more of the Marvel multiverse that was established in Spider-Man: Far From Home, or if this is simply a new take on Electro.
In the post-credits scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home, J.K. Simmons was seen reprising his role as The Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson, a character he played in Sam Raimi’s 2002 to 2007 Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. With Foxx now returning as Electro from the Andrew Garfield-led The Amazing Spider-Man series, it seems that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are bringing all three eras of Spider-Man.
All these are still theories as no official statement has been released from either Marvel Studios or Sony Pictures. It is possible that these are new versions of those characters, and the studios are leveraging the nostalgia (Simmons) and star power (Foxx) attached to them to boost the next entry of a multi-billion-dollar franchise featuring the slinging superhero.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, production for this film will begin in Atlanta, Georgia USA later this year. Spider-Man 3 is slated to release on 17 December, 2021.
