After a post-credit scene and a confirmation earlier this month, the sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife‘s current untitled release has received a release date. The sequel of the beloved franchise will hit the theatres on 23 December 2023.
Earlier, the makers hinted at a sequel on 8 June, Ghostbusters Day and now the confirmation comes. Director of Afterlife Jason Reitman stated that the codename for the sequel is Firehouse alluding to the iconic headquarters of the titular team that led the 1984 and 1989 classics.
The upcoming film will mark the return of the 2021 film’s cast, which included Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, and Carrie Coon to continue the story of the Spengler family. It consists of Callie and her two children Trevor and Phoebe, who relocated to Oklahoma after Callie’s father Egon Spengler left them the family home. The children learn about their grandfather’s involvement with the original Ghostbusters team while exploring the old house. As they learn more about their grandfather’s history, they transform into the next generation of Ghostbusters and defeat an extraterrestrial threat that damages both their new home and the world. The Spengler family is expected to return to Manhattan in New York City for the sequel, which will take place in the city where the film franchise began.
The fourth instalment in the legendary 1980s horror-comedy series, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, was directed by Jason Reitman, the son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, and was the first to follow the original two films’ plot after Paul Feig’s 2016 remake with a female cast. The film had $75 million as a production budget and it made a box office collection grossing over $200 million.
