Disney/Marvel’s Eternals becomes a massive theatrical success with the strong opening nearly $161.7 million worldwide.
According to reports, Eternals managed to collect $90.7 million internationally on its opening weekend and grossed $71 million domestically. The film becomes second-biggest worldwide opening for a Hollywood title in 2021.
Chloé Zhao’s movie had a strong opening weekend but it failed to surpass the opening weekends of Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. In IMAX, Eternals grossed six million dollars from 320 screens in 58 markets.
Eternals is based on the Marvel Comics race of the same name created by writer/artist Jack Kirby, who co-created many of Marvel’s most popular characters. The movie is produced by Marvel Studios and will be the 26th film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The film casts includes Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader, Ajak Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena and Kit Harington plays Dane Whitman.
Kevin Feige and Nate Moore serve as the producers, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and Kevin de la Noy serving as executive producers. The story is by Ryan Firpo and Matthew K. Firpo, and the screenplay is done by Chloé Zhao and Patrick Burleigh.
