The Walking Dead chief content officer Scott M. Gimple has hinted at a potential animated series for the franchise. The Walking Dead has announced that it will be ending with season 11. The final season will consist of 24 episodes and will premiere in late 2021.
“I will say that one thing I’m looking at hard is animation. I mean, (Robert Kirkman, whose comic book Invincible is in production as an animated hourlong drama at Amazon) has a lot of talent around that, so that’s one-stop shopping for me,” said Gimple in a statement.
“World Beyond co-creator Matt Negrete, and I actually come from animation. We worked initially together in animation back in the day. And then we also went to college together. … But I mean, Invincible is going to be a really interesting thing to see. Hour-long animation? And the comic is fun, but it’s not a comedy and it gets super dark and dramatic, regularly. So I can’t wait for that. And Kirkman might lead the way on that too. It may lead us right back to a Walking Dead animated series,” Gimple told The Hollywood Reporter.
Along with the current spinoffs Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond, there are plans for several more, including a series focused on Daryl and Carol which will have Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride reprising their roles from the main series, and a feature film series with Andrew Lincoln returning as Rick Grimes.
