Sudhakanth Vadla, a Contemporary Artist and Sand Animator based in Hyderabad will conduct Sand Animation Sessions from January 2014. These sessions will be held thrice a week for a year in Art9Studio, and the fees is Rs 50,000 per year.
Talking to AnimationXpress.com, Sudhakanth Vadla, shares about the important aspects of Sand Animation.
What inspired you to get into Sand Animation?
My career as a professional Sand Animator started from 2001. In the years gone by, as sketching has been my strength, I tried to initiate sketching figures on sand. Continuous Practice, experience, control, speed, grasping and execution helped me to continue with sand art animation.
Iliyana Yahava, the artist from MONACO in France initially, who used an old technique for tracing pictures, worked as a great inspiration for me for Sand Animation.
Till date, how many sand animation projects have you handled?
I have performed at about 18 events in a year’s time. At Loksata Party ,UNINOR, ,TV5,World Tourism Day, At Dr YSRNITHM,HYD, Organized by UNWTO & AP Tourism, Cognizant, P&G, Reitz India etc.

Give detailed information about the breakdown of this course?
For the first six months, I will train students on sketching and assure practice sessions on regular basis. Once they are thorough with it, then only they will move on to sand motion practice and story board practice for the last 3 months, learning professional artistic methods at the same time.
How’s Sand Animation different from other types of Animation?
Sand Animation is quite different from CG Animation. In the process of creating sand animated characters, the individual needs to be clear with the character, which will add up emotions with sand. The artist needs to communicate and narrate a story with normal sand, as it is a versatile form of art, which is impossible without a human approach.
What are the key elements of Sand Animation you will focus on during the course used in Sand Animation?
Yes, there are several such things which need to be used during the process of Sand Animation. In order to give out an interesting cinematic outcome to Sand animation, technology- Light box, Overhead Camera, Projector, Screen, Sand, Background music and good artistic skills are the major elements.
The light box: It is made by ply wood and the dimensions of light box 2.6 feet x 3 feet. One can even use transparent acrylic glass sheet which would have the same dimentions, but height may vary person to person. As this form of animation is considered to be a Contemporary Versatile form of Art, the element of light box would help the artist to spread the fine grain sand. The Light under the box helps to give out effects on the story being created by sand.
Overhead Camera: The Overhead camera captures the illuminated images, which is later on sent to the projector. Panasonic 102 would be great during any Sand Animation performance
Projector: High illumines is better for clarity.
Last but not the least, Silver or Led Screen and Soft Music which can bring out the theme of the sand art, assures applaud for the excellent art work created by sand solely.
What are the different types of color textures used to bring out different moods in Sand Animation?
Sand grain and vibrant colors with the accompaniment of light according to story, helps to highlight the mood of any story in particular.
Use of rubber tools, Scales, brushes to covey helps to bring out the colors in the right proportion for a particular story. That’s how Sand Animation can evoke different kind of expressions and feelings that can connect directly to humans.
For instance, if one needs to tell the progress story of a particular company, making several figures which symbolizes success can help out in creating it.
According to you, what’s the scope of Sand Animation in India?
It strengthens public relation, allows cost effectiveness as it involves low budgeting ,increasing scope, exposure of talent to explore it to new horizons. Sand Animation helps in explaining the success of many corporate companies in the most artistic and lavish way. In fact, the audiences enjoy such artistic explanation compared to verbal communication. Taking this factor into consideration, future Sand Animators will be in great demand by corporate companies.
