Pixar’s recent animated feature, Soul has bagged two nominations at The 78th Golden Globe Awards, scheduled to be held on 28 February 2021.
To be broadcast on NBC with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey returning as hosts after 2015, The Golden Globes generally happen in January. This year, however, the organisers – The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, postponed the ceremony owing to the pandemic.
Soul has been nominated in ‘Best Original Score, Motion Picture’ and ‘Best Motion Picture, Animated’ categories. Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste have been nominated for their original score in Soul, alongside Alexandre Desplat for The Midnight Sky, Ludwig Göransson for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, James Newton Howard for News of the World and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for Mank.
The nominations for the Best Animated Motion Picture apart from Soul are The Croods: A New Age (DreamWorks), Onward (Disney), Over the Moon (Netflix) and Wolfwalkers (Apple).
Directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Kemp Powers, the film has a notable voice cast including the likes of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Rachel House, Alice Braga, Richard Ayoade, Phylicia Rashad, Donnell Rawlings, Questlove, and Angela Bassett. The story follows a middle school music teacher, Joe Gardner, who seeks to reunite his soul and his body after they are accidentally separated, just before his big break as a jazz musician. Soul is the first Pixar film to have an African-American protagonist.
Soul is now streaming on Disney+.
