A new trailer has been released for the upcoming Disney+ exclusive anime, Tatami Time Machine Blues, which will begin streaming in Japan on 14 September with new episodes released every Wednesday.
The teaser was unveiled on Asmik Ace’s official YouTube channel and covers all news related to the release of the new title. The anime is an adaptation of Tomihiko Morimi’s novel of the same name. The new trailer features the main protagonist discovering the titular time machine along with his delighted roommates. It also gives viewers a glimpse of many of the series’ unique and creative character designs.
Although the series, which will consist of a total of six episodes, will stream on Disney+ in September, there will also be a compilation film version of the anime which will have a limited three-week run in theaters starting 30 September. The first five episodes will be based on the events of the novel, while the sixth episode will feature an original story. This episode will become available on Disney+ starting 12 October and will not be included in the film version.
Tatami Time Machine Blues is a sequel to Morimi’s earlier novel, The Tatami Galaxy, a psychological dramedy which tells the story of a university student that becomes trapped in a recurring time loop where he constantly tries to live his life to the fullest, only to be met with failure and disappointment. Tatami Time Machine Blues revolves around Galaxy’s main protagonist attempting to go back in time to stop his trouble-making friend Ozu from breaking the remote to their apartment building’s air conditioner and thus leaving him and his friends to suffer during a sweltering heat wave.
Shingo Natsume (One-Punch Man) will be directing the anime at studio Science Saru. Several cast members from the anime adaptation of Tatami Galaxy are returning to reprise their roles in Time Machine Blues, including Shintaro Asanuma (Assassination Classroom) as “I” the nameless protagonist, Maaya Sakamoto (Fruits Basket 2019) as Akashi, Hiroyuki Yoshino (Mobile Suit Gundam 00) as Ozu, Junichi Suwabe (Fairy Tail) as Jogasaki, and Yuko Kaida (Gintama, Tiger & Bunny) as Hanuki. Kazuya Nakai, who is known for his role as Roronoa Zoro in One Piece, will play the character Higuchi, who was originally voiced by the late Keiji Fujiwara (Gintama, Fullmetal Alchemist).
Disney+ will eventually release Tatami Time Machine Blues internationally, but there is currently no set release date.
