Core Team of Reliance MediaWorks |
In the stiff competitive world of animation, there always was a need felt by Animation studios to “Preserve” their Key Manpower. Studios also tend to become quite possessive, when it comes to their core skilled manpower. Animation by nature demands a huge number of artists to work on TV Series, which typically has 13 or 26 half hour episodes. And when such a need arises, companies have to raise that manpower quite quickly, even if it means hiring manpower from other studios to fill up requisite numbers.
In such situations, “Shambhoo Phalke” – Executive Producer – Animation of Reliance MediaWorks Limited (RMWL), conceptualized and implemented an interesting solution on the live international project of Ninja Hattori. He calls it “Insourcing”.
The concept of “Insourcing” as explained by Shamboo Phalke is quite simple. He hires artists from other animation studios to work on project, along with his core team. The artists work in RMWL premise in Pune using its infrastructure. Payment is made to the studio, depending on the approved work delivered by its artists. Studios get ALL the manpower back after completion of the project. He has so far hired 20 plus artists from a Hyderabad based Company, who are working on the International Project NINJA Hattori and other properties in RMWL.
According to Phalke it is a win-win situation for both sides. “We get artists to work on our project. The studio, who lends their manpower, gets not only a chance to work on a live international project but also get trained by one of the best structured project management team in the country. It significantly adds on the artist’s expertise which otherwise would take months to prepare by themselves”, Phalke asserted.

Shamboo Phalke is clear about the concept of insourcing working for him as he says, “This opens doors to many a new opportunity in future for us, especially for projects secured by RMWL with an outsourcing need – We know exactly where to go. Obviously, studio’s who have worked on Insourcing with us, get the higher priority in being selected as our Outsourcing partners as we know the studio and its artists who know our methods of working and we are assured of the results”.
RMWL has also formulated 4 internal groups of artists categorized on their levels wherein the artists get promoted from one group to another based on their work and talent. This ensures a continuous supply of manpower internally, thereby reducing need to go to open market every time during ramp up for hiring.
RMWL has an established system of workflow and constant updates are done about the progress of work so that every group and artist is aware of work of other groups and artists. This leads to a healthy competitive work environment internally.
