Japanese Animation Creative Masterclass at Day 2 of FICCI was panelled by Shin ichi Suzuki, Sadao Tsukioka, Yoichiro and moderated by Naohiro Shichijo. Shin Ichi Suzuki shared about some of the animation from Japanese during the war in 1933 which was humorous and gave strength to the young people. Most of the animation is an influence from China and India, only the graphics and the word change. He showcased the first robot animation which is now being made in color and other Japanese animation like Ninja Hathori and Doremon which is famous world wide.
Since there were not too many animators and it was a starting point for Japan in animation, they had something called the the bank system. Where they used the same frame again and again and the animation went on for long.
Sadao Tsukoka, an Animation professor from Japan shared that it is a gamble for people to make animation since the showcasing of the content through exhibitions and they never knew if there would be enough viewers and to make money. He compared Europe and America which was also exhibited their animation in the same manner.
“As a result of this German and France they started teaching animation in colleges and art school and they encouraged their students to be artistic for this field and find other ways of showcasing content.” He said.
He explained two words – Ukeru and Omonpakru which is used in Japanese Animation which means that when a new animation is viewed by the audience who you have never met and will never meet you make them feel what you are feeling through your animation.
Japanese literature and poem use these words which means making other feels what you feel. To make a good animation, one needs that so that everybody will relate to the content that’s the point of making good animation.
These 2 words are interconnected and it requires understanding to others thoughts and. Two good examples of such animation is Naruto and One peace. Japanese Animation often use Emphathy and Sympathy in their story.
He shared about how Japanese animation is connected and is reflected by India. The feeling that to accept changes which is strongly shown in their comics and animation. It comes from following buddhism and accept whatever comes your way.

The panelists shared the oldest known anime in existence first screened in 1917 – a two-minute clip of a samurai trying to test a new sword on his target, only to suffer defeat. By the 1930s animation became an alternative format of storytelling to the live-action industry in Japan. But it suffered competition from foreign producers and many animators. The first talkie anime was Chikara to Onna no Yo no Naka, produced by Masaoka in 1933. The first feature length animated film was Momotaro’s Divine Sea Warriors directed by Seo in 1945 with sponsorship by the Imperial Japanese Navy.
