DNEG and Alcon Entertainment to jointly produce ‘Garfield’

Leading visual effects (VFX) and animation studio DNEG announced their involvement as exclusive animation studio for the new Garfield movie, producing the animated feature alongside their partners at Alcon Entertainment. Following the immense applause earned for their first animated feature, Ron’s Gone Wrong, DNEG Animation is taking the reins on the latest animated adaptation of beloved comic strip character Garfield, everyone’s favourite lasagne-eating feline.

“The cat is out of the bag! We’re delighted to be partnering with Alcon Entertainment to produce this fresh new take on a much-loved character. Garfield marks an important milestone for DNEG, in that it is one of our first projects as a production partner to be announced. We’re busy developing an exciting slate of new content alongside our filmmaking partners, and I’m looking forward to sharing more details in the coming months,” said DNEG CEO Namit Malhotra.

The movie is being directed by Mark Dindal having previously worked on Emperor’s New Groove and Chicken Little. David Reynolds of Finding Nemo is on board as the writer. Garfield himself is being voiced by none other than Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World).

Malhotra and DNEG Animation President Tom Jacomb will both serve as producers on the project. The animated feature will be distributed by Sony Pictures.

Created by Jim Davis, Garfield first appeared as a newspaper cartoon in 1978 and has gone on to become the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world.
