DC Studios’ upcoming Creature Commandos, which is co-produced by Warner Bros. Animation, will debut on the streaming service Max on 5 December. The Max original adult animated series will be the first title in James Gunn’s new soft reboot of the DC Universe.
The seven-episode series based on characters from the DC Comics, is written and executive produced by Gunn (The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, Guardians of the Galaxy). It will follow a weekly release schedule with the final episode to be aired on 16 January.
The official synopsis of the series reads: Creature Commandos tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails… they’re your last, worst option.
The cast of the show includes Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
The adult animated series is executive produced by Peter Safran, Dean Lorey, and Sam Register; Rick Morales serves as a supervising producer.
The Creature Commandos team first appeared in the DC comic titled Weird War Tales volume 1 issue 93, created by American writer J.M. DeMatteis and American comic artist Pat Broderick. The comic was released in November 1980.
The synopsis of Weird War Tales #93 comic reads: At a Midwest Army base in the Spring of 1942, Lieutenant Matthew Shrieve of the U.S. Army Intelligence briefed various generals, admirals, and senators on Project “M” and introduced the Creature Commandos, consisting of Warren Griffith (a werewolf), Vincent Velcro (a vampire), and “Lucky” Taylor (a Frankensteinian monster). After witnessing a display of their abilities, a general sanctioned the Creature Commandos, although claimed that he never wanted to see them again.
