Bruce Campbell, renowned for his role as Ash Williams in the Evil Dead franchise, revealed that an animated project of the IP is in the works.
The actor disclosed about the project to Entertainment Weekly while promoting his latest Peacock streaming series, Hysteria. He expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are developing an animated version, like a series. I love the idea of an Evil Dead series, and I could see it being completely bonkers! They could really go above and beyond anything they’ve done with the live-action projects.”
Evil Dead is a comedy horror franchise created by Sam Raimi consisting of five feature films with the first four helmed by the aforementioned director, a television series, and various video games. The franchise follows the adventures of Ashley “Ash” J. Williams, as he battles demonic forces unleashed by the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, an ancient Sumerian text. The series begins with a group of friends vacationing in a remote cabin where they accidentally release evil spirits, leading to gruesome and terrifying events. The franchise blends horror and dark comedy, evolving through sequels like Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, which see Ash transported to medieval times to fight the undead. Expanding its cult status, the franchise also includes the TV series Ash vs Evil Dead and a 2013 reboot.
In the upcoming animated series, Campbell confirmed he will voice Ash, remarking, “We’re out of the cabin, Raimi doesn’t have to direct, I don’t have to star as Ash. The trick is to take the elements that people like, which is innocent people being tortured by a malicious entity, and it’s people who have no skills to stop it.”
The Evil Dead film franchise has collectively grossed $300 million worldwide and has two more installments reportedly in development.
