Netflix announced that the much anticipated animated film Nimona will be released in 2023. The OTT giant partnered with Annapurna Pictures when production began early last year.
Nimona is adapted from the New York Times bestselling graphic novel by author ND Stevenson, who announced the news and debuted a first look on Twitter.
The cast includes Chloë Grace Moretz (Desperate Housewives) as Nimona, Riz Ahmed (Venom) as Ballister Boldheart, and Eugene Lee Yang (Recipe For Change) as Ambrosius Goldenloin.
As per the official synopsis, A Knight is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he’s sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone.
Nick Bruno and Troy Quane are on board as directors, while the film will be produced by Roy Lee, Karen Ryan, Julie Zackary. Robert L. Baird, Megan Ellison, Andrew Millstein serve as the executive producers. DNEG Animation is taking care of the animation work of Nimona.
In 2021, Disney had announced that they were shutting down Blue Sky Studios owing to the pandemic. Nimona, which was being produced by the studio, had to be shelved. It was slated for a January 2022 release.
