Animated film ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ to hit Disney+ in December

It was announced late last year that a new Diary of a Wimpy Kid animated film would be coming to Disney+ in 2021, and the streamer has finally released the first teaser poster for the upcoming movie. Adapting the first book in Jeff Kinney’s worldwide bestselling series, the new movie premieres exclusively on Disney+ on 3 December.

Here’s the official synopsis: Greg Heffley is a scrawny but ambitious kid with an active imagination and big plans to be rich and famous – he just has to survive middle school first. To make matters worse, Greg’s lovable best friend Rowley seems to coast through life and succeed at everything without even trying! As details of his hilarious – and often disastrous – attempts to fit in fill the pages of his journal, Greg learns to appreciate true friends and the satisfaction that comes from standing up for what is right.

The animated movie will be directed by Futurama director Swinton Scott and written and produced by Kinney himself. Among the voice cast, we have Brady Noon, Ethan Childress, and Chris Diamantopoulos.

Regarding this new animated film, Kinney shared, “This film feels like the book comes to life, and it’s exciting to see Greg Heffley and his family and friends in their fully-animated glory. It is the Wimpy World in a way no one has seen before. Working on this movie, I feel like we have been sitting on a wonderful secret. I can’t wait to finally share it with the world!”

Kinney is one of the world’s bestselling authors; Diary of a Wimpy Kid books have sold more than 250 million copies globally in just 14 years. Multiple live-action films of a Diary of a Wimpy Kid series are already available for streaming on Disney+. You can watch Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul. The third movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, is on HBO Max.

The new animated version will be launched this holiday season on 3 December.
