Adult Swim’s animated action-comedy series The Venture Bros. has been cancelled after seven seasons. Series co-creator Christopher McCulloch, who goes by the pseudonym Jackson Publick, confirmed the program’s cancellation on Twitter on Monday.
“Unfortunately, it’s true. #VentureBros has been canceled. We got the highly disappointing news a few months ago, while we were writing what would have been season eight. We thank you, our amazing fans, for 17 years of your kind (and patient) attention. And, as always, We Love You,” McCulloch said.
The show was one of the longest-running original series on Adult Swim. It spanned 17 years, with seven seasons releasing years apart. The pilot episode aired in 2003, and the first season in 2004. The final season ended in 2018.
“We also want more Venture Bros. and have been working with Jackson [Publick] and Doc [Hammer] to find another way to continue the Venture Bros. story,” Adult Swim said in a statement.
The show followed the adventures of scientist Dr. Rusty Venture, his teenaged sons, Dean and Hank, and their bodyguard, Brock Sampson. The adult animated cartoon spoofed many superheroes, pop culture tropes and featured main characters that were a riff on the Johnny Quest crew.
The voice cast included McCulloch, Hammer, Michael Sinterniklaas, James Urbaniak, Patrick Warburton, Steven Rattazzi and Dana Snyder.
“So, as it must to all, cancellation has come for The Venture Bros. The pilot aired 17 years ago, which means the show was almost old enough to vote,” tweeted Urbaniak. “It was one of the great gifts of my life and career. The fans were, quite simply, the best. Thank you, everybody. Go. Team. Venture!”
According to reports, the possibility of moving the show to HBO Max is being discussed.
