Ever seen a connection between animation and plays? Well here’s one.
A group of students who call themselves ‘Red Curry’ along with Sachin Bhatnagar from the Chandigarh branch of MAAC are currently working on a series of three 3D animated movies(15 minutes each), titled ‘Alone and Loving It.’
The story and concept for the trilogy has been adapted from the play ‘They’re made up of meat’ by Terry Bisson.
Speaking about how the idea of adaptation from a play came about, Sachin Bhatnagar, Director of the project as well as DGM-Technical of MAAC shared with Animation Xpress.com, “We were on the lookout for a concept which would be funny and almost at the same time we chanced upon this play on the internet called ‘They’re made up of meat’. Somehow it immediately clicked in and we started working around it. But very soon we realized that the play itself would not have sufficient content for us to blow it up into a film so we rewrote the entire thing into a three part series which will now be released as three short animated films with the first one being worked on at the moment.”
The development of, Alone- and loving it’ started in June ’06 by a group of twenty students. Currently in the last phase of the pre-production stage with the story board and concept art being worked on, the first part of the three part series is proposed to release towards the end of 2007.
The entire story is in three parts and would be turned into three short films of about 15 minutes each which will primarily be 3D animated with a blend of 2D. The 2D elements would be stylized while the 3D components would be highly detailed. There are about 7 – 8 characters in the film and each one of them have their own unique identity and do not resemble each other at all.
The plot revolves around two characters called Will and Nill and their misadventures. Their home planet receives a faint signal from deep space and someone has to be sent to investigate. As luck would have it, Will and Nill are chosen for the mission even though they do not qualify at all for the job. There is a double motive behind this, a hidden agenda which is not known to these two. For them, it is their biggest ever achievement and as things roll out, a chain of events begin which is one roller coaster of a ride.
The movie is being produced for cinematic release but the mass showcase medium would be home video and television. Sachin and his group also plan on sending the movie to various festivals across the globe.
“Alone – and loving it is an ambitious project for students of MAAC, Chandigarh. It is a unique way of involving students of animation in a real world production project. We still have a long way to go but an exciting road ahead” concluded Sachin.
