Red Arrow Studios International, the distribution division of Red Arrow Studios, has secured global rights to distribute the forthcoming New York Times series, The Weekly.
Produced by The New York Times and Left/Right, a Red Arrow Studios company, The Weekly has been commissioned by FX, which has first-run North American rights, in partnership with Hulu, which is the exclusive streaming home for new episodes of the series the day after air. FX has committed to a minimum of 30 episodes, with the series scheduled to premiere in 2019.
Red Arrow Studios International president Henrik Pabst said, “The Weekly is set to be a landmark narrative news series for 2019, and will deliver compelling US and international stories that go beyond the news, and reveal the workings of one of the world’s great news organizations. In a time of intense debate around the world about the role of a free press and the relationship between press and politics, we are honoured to be distributing this show internationally and taking it to global audiences on behalf of The New York Times, Left/Right and its partners.”
The New York Times assistant managing editor Sam Dolnick said, “The mission of The New York Times is to help people understand the world. By partnering with FX and Hulu, now with Red Arrow Studios International, we are excited to bring quality, original journalism to the largest possible audience.”
The Weekly will be a narrative documentary news program that includes one or two of The Times’s biggest and most important visual stories each week. Viewers will be with those stories and the reporters as the show brings them to life. The Weekly will find the stories behind the headlines that would otherwise be left on the cutting room floor.
Left/Right, a Red Arrow Studios company co-founded by Ken Druckerman and Banks Tarver, are the award-winning producers of acclaimed docu-series including This American Life and The Circus for Showtime, as well as multiple episodes of Frontline for PBS. Red Arrow Studios International will launch the series to the international market at MIPCOM 2018.
