DC Comics comedy series ‘Powerless’ turns powerless as showrunner departs

The DC comics comedy series Powerless is literally turning ‘powerless’. The sitcom creator Ben Queen has departed the series. Producers NBC and Warner Bros. Television are on their search for a new showrunner.

The production on the midseason series has been postponed till a replacement for Queen will be found. Ideally, the production for the show was slated to begin at month’s end.

Queen’s decision to depart the project starring Vanessa Hudgens was a mutual one and stemmed from creative differences with the network and WBTV. He wrote the pilot for the anticipated superhero sitcom, and was set to be co-showrunner on the series with Michael Patrick Jann, who directed the pilot.

Based on characters from DC Comics, Powerless is a comedy series that stars Vanessa Hudgens as Emily, an insurance adjuster who specialises in helping powerless people who need coverage for damage caused by superheroes. The series is set in the same universe full of superheroes, villains and everyday people. It is described as an office comedy about the exceedingly average employees at an insurance company and their quest to find their own power.

Queen, who also created A to Z for WBTV, will remain employed at the studio as part of his overarching deal. Powerless is expected to debut on NBC in January 2017.
