In a country like India, saving data is important since the data rates are high in the country and most of the subscribers in the country are 2G subscribers. Chrome for Android today with an update has received additional optimizations of its own, with an improved Data Saver mode.
Chrome for Android has the Data Saving feature available for a little while now and offers up to 50 per cent data compression on pages by passing them through Google’s own servers. But with this latest update, Chrome will prohibit biggest data hoggers on web pages and prevent them to load high res images. Google claims this update will save up to 70 per cent of the data with Chrome’s Data Saver mode.
The first update makes way to India and Indonesia first, with other regions set to follow in the coming months. The Data Saver mode has to be turned on and is under Settings, Advanced User.
The 70 per cent saving claim, Google says will be achieved by removing images on a page when Chrome detects that a user’s connection is too slow. Once the whole page is loaded, users can tap on the backgrounds to just show the images that they want. If not then there is also an option which will pop-up offering to load up all the images on the page at once. This feature will certainly help in the regions where web connectivity is limited and with slow connection, the web pages take time to load, but will also save on the data.
