The Dragons show Game of Thrones finally won big at Emmy awards and they did so in style. HBO’s popular fantasy series grabbed record breaking 12 awards out of the 24 nominations it received this year. The previous record was held by White House drama The West Wing which won 9 awards in 2000.
The success at the Emmys is surprising because of the fact that fantasy and sci-fi shows have been notably under-represented at the Emmys over the years. Prior to this victory, the only genre show in the entire long 67-year history Emmys to win the Outstanding Drama Series was Lost in 2005.
One of the awards it has been the front runner since the debut season has been in the Visual Effects category which it has won four times in the row now and tells the world that how the VFX has reached the small screen in a very big way. One of the studios working on the VFX of the show was the Indian subsidiary of the Los Angeles based Prana Studios and it was the one behind the mighty dragons in the show.
Game of Thrones really upped its visual effects game this past year and episodes like Hardhome (Episode 8) alone probably had as many effects as the entire first season of the show, and Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons were bigger, badder, and more visually complicated than they’d ever been before.
The show grabbed top honours for its acoustics and won both the awards in the category – Outstanding Sound Editing and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a series.
This year is also the first time since the show began in 2011 that it has won the best drama series award. Its other accolades this year include best writing, best direction and best supporting actor for Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister.
