South Korea’s CJ E&M scouts for content for its channel Toon!verse

In the second session of the Animation Lab, there were two petite ladies from South Korea namely CJ E&M GM, investment & marketing, animation business division Kay Jung and Toon!verse CJ E&M acquisition manager Eun Sun Lee, who are also commissioners of the Animation Lab.

“South Korea as a market is very selective of its content and thus we wish to commission some really high quality shows that match up to the standards of our home grown content,” says Kay. “At CJ E&M we are very focused on working on content for both online and offline connectivity with our audience and thus we also have a huge character merchandise business apart from having great content.”

Toon!verse is the number one kids channel in Korea and caters to the age-group of 4 to 13 years. The channel has managed to stay on top of the ratings chart ever since commencing broadcast signals in 1995 and has a great content mix of both in-house content and exclusive content rights for globally recognised shows.

“We reach to nearly 22 million households in Korea and hold a 35 per cent market share, with next in line being Cartoon Network at 16 per cent, so if you feel you have content that can work in Korea then we are the channel you would want to be on,” exults Eun.

Both the ladies are here for some serious business and would be meeting various IP owners during the three days to acquire rights for some of their shows.

“ATF is a great place to meet Asian creators, who understand the sentiments of the Asian community and which makes better business sense as we would want more and more of the community to co-create and co-exist in the near future,” ends Kay.
