‘Adipurush’ teaser-trailer: Mythological epic drama gives vibes of video game than a live-action movie

The teaser-trailer of the much hyped and anticipated mega project Adipurush is finally out. Helmed by National Award winning filmmaker Om Raut, the movie is based on the timeless Hindu mythology Ramayana and stars Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan and Kriti Sanon in the lead roles. As reported earlier, Adipurush is a CGI fest.

The 1:46 minute teaser-trailer gives glimpses of key characters of the movie. The trailer opens with the visual of Lord Ram (Prabhas) meditating underwater, going into Ram facing against flying demons with his bow and arrow. The scene cuts to a snow-laden blue-eyed Lankesh (Saif Ali Khan) who can be seen praying in a snowy mountain. The teaser also reveals his 10-head face in a particular sequence and he is also seen riding a CG flying creature. The makers also show a glimpse of Sita (Kriti Sanon), Hanuman and Laxman (Sunny Singh) along with vaanar (monkey) sena.

Right from the word go, the teaser is filled with CG environments, creatures, effects and a lot of action. This is probably the first time that an Indian movie has tried to mix all CG creatures with the live-action elements and actors on a larger scale. To give a reference, something like this was seen in The Jungle Book, wherein some characters were in live-action and rest of the animals were CG. The film has most likely made use of motion capture, virtual production technologies. While Adipurush has the potential to be a visual spectacle, based on the teaser released, more than a movie trailer, it seems like a cinematic game trailer.

The audiences have a divided opinion about the VFX of the film and some of them have expressed their disappointment on social networking sites as well. It’s too soon to comment on how the film will pan out at the time of its release. With three more months to go, the makers might fine tune the visuals before bringing it out on the big screens.

Adipurush will be released in 3D and IMAX in multiple languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. After multiple delays due to the pandemic, the movie is set to  debut on 12 January 2023 in theatres. It is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Rajesh Nair and Om Raut along with Prasad Sutar, who is also the VFX supervisor for Adipurush. Sutar has a vast experience in visual effects and has worked on VFX heavy films like Bajirao Mastani, Jagga Jasoos, Tanhaji
