Technicolor Launches Virdata for IoT and M2M Cloud Services

Technicolor , one of the worldwide technology leaders in the media and entertainment sector, announces launching of Virdata to provide businesses with cloud-based monitoring and management services for “Internet of Things” (IoT) and M2M (machine-to-machine) services.

Virdata’s device and application monitoring and management service features a real-time and historical big data analytics stack. Initial industries targeted by Virdata are consumer electronics, automotive, utilities, health, industrial automation and retail.

Virdata is teaming with IBM to take advantage of IBM SoftLayer cloud capabilities to provide clients with elastic and scalable services.

At the 2014 International CES, Virdata and IBM will demonstrate several implementations of its capabilities including: geo location and real-time and historical data for a tablet; utilizing on-board diagnostics (OBD) to analyze performance data in a connected car as well as fleet management; and tracking patient data with a heartbeat monitor.

“Technicolor’s foray into services that enable businesses to conduct faster and more thorough analysis of big data and apply that information is a logical extension of our commitment to develop innovative solutions to address the expanding digital market and to leverage existing assets for scale or access to broader ecosystems,” said Vince Pizzica, Senior Executive Vice President, President of Corporate Partnerships and Ventures, Technicolor.  “Employing these strategies, Virdata is working with IBM, the global leader in cloud, to bring an exciting new approach to IoT services”.

Softlayer operates a global cloud infrastructure platform built for Internet scale and currently provides Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IAAS) to leading-edge customers ranging from Web startups to global enterprises. SoftLayer’s bare metal servers and virtual cloud infrastructure provide the optimal platform for running cloud native workloads like Virdata and provides exceptional scalability and control that Technicolor needs.

Virdata will operate as a “pay-as-you-go” solution. Recently, Virdata released its extension of CHEF abstraction layer FOG, a DEVOPS tool, to the community, thereby facilitating additional on-boarding optimization for other Softlayer customers.

Several advanced development activities in the big data analytics and visualization technologies domains have paved the way for the IBM and Virdata relationship that is focused on delivering IoT and M2M services to the consumer electronics market as well as other opportunities on a worldwide basis.

Both IBM and Technicolor technologies, with ongoing roadmap alignments around cloud platform built on open standards, are developing innovative solutions in the connected world, thereby enabling an unprecedented number of uses for all industries.

Cloud-agnostic architecture to drive interoperability
Virdata’s game-changing new approach to monitoring and managing IoT and M2M services is based on emerging cloud native technologies.  Its cloud-agnostic architecture also allows public – or other IAAS providers – private and hybrid implementation options. Virdata is currently engaged with application partners such as Nexstep, a customer-care application leveraging IBM’s Worklight technology, and Olea Sensor Networks, which is developing disruptive wireless Heart Sensor and accompanied analytics. Additionally, Virdata embraces open source technologies such as the Cloud Foundry and OpenStack initiatives.

The company is collaborating with academic research facilities at the University of California, Berkeley, for new emerging real-time in-memory analytics stacks and Ghent University in Belgium for data analytics.  Virdata has also joined the Smart TV Alliance, which brings together CE companies, application developers, content providers, and software and technology providers to facilitate the development of interactive content for TV displays.
