DC is pulling back the curtain on its plans to create a new podcast superhero universe. Warner Bros, DC and Spotify are continuing their partnership with a new slate of DC-themed podcasts. The publisher is working on nine shows for Spotify including Wonder Woman, Joker, Catwoman and more.
On 22 February 2021, DC chief creative officer Jim Lee revealed that the company is planning podcasts about Wonder Woman, Batman, Lois Lane, Catwoman, Riddler and Batgirl during Spotify’s Stream On, a virtual live stream event.
Lee said, “We have a ton of other amazing characters. We are planning on doing a Catwoman/Katana podcast, Superman and Lois Lane, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Riddler… There are so many amazing characters that we can explore. This is a long-term partnership between Warner Bros., DC and Spotify. I think the fanbase is going to respond to this in an exciting way and embrace it as something new and novel and supplements all the other ways they take in the DC Universe.”
DC and Spotify reached an agreement in 2020 to produce narrative-scripted podcasts featuring DC superheroes and supervillains. The multi-series, multiyear deal was part of a bigger partnership between Spotify and DC Comics’ parent company, WarnerMedia.
Produced by The Dark Knight Rises’s David S. Goyer, the first project out of the partnership is Batman Unburied, which will explore the “darker aspects of Bruce Wayne’s psychology.”
Goyer said, “I’ve been fortunate to have had a hand in shaping how audiences see Batman, and now it’s really fun to have a hand in shaping how audiences hear Batman. With Batman Unburied, we’re going to be doing a deep dive into Batman’s unconscious mind and into his dream state, really leaning into the idea of playing around with the idea of surround sound.” He then teased the idea of Joker whispering things into the listener’s ear, which he described as “nightmarish.”
The studio is also working on a separate Batman podcast for HBO Max. The comedic series, Batman: The Audio Adventures, will star Jeffrey Wright.
Batman Unburied will be released later this year on Spotify.
